2010 Sprint Car Rules West Texas Sprint Series 305 Spec Rules & Specifications The Race Saver 305 SPEC head and accompanying engine and car rules are the foundation of our West Texas Sprint Series. These rules are intended to make our sprint car class both AFFORDABLE and FUN. As you read through the rules keep in mind that they are designed to save you MONEY and help you and everyone else in this class be competitive and have fun racing. We can’t keep racers from spending money but we can try to keep that money from buying a significant advantage. RACER 305 SPEC HEAD: Absolutely NO changes, NO machining, milling, resurfacing, grinding, NO polishing, welding, acid or caustic work, shot penning, glass beading, coating, or any other process that will alter the machined surfaces or the natural sand cast finish. Must retain all original dimensions & configurations including: Valves, springs, retainers, stems & guides. The ONLY work allowed is: Reseating the valves. NO top cuts that extend to the aluminum of the chamber. NO under the seat relief cuts, NO work that enlarges the as delivered throat size, 1.810 int. & 1.345 ext. (+ or – 0.10). NO bowl changes. NO CHANGES! Every dimension of thee heads has a gauge dimension that must be met for them to be certified. Change any one of them and you will be disqualified. The stamped identification marks may not be altered. Compression Ratio: 10.25 to absolute maximum. C.R. may be measured by pouring the assembled cylinder. Absolute minimum assembled cylinder volume: 70cc. Heads may NOT be milled!! Only exception is when milling is required to repair surface. Repairs MUST be pre-approved. Contact RACESAVER 305 SPEC @ 540-932-4541 before attempting repairs. A repair authorization number will be issued. After repair, heads must be re-certified and marked accordingly. Original serial numbers and certification marks must be intact. They may not be altered or obscured. Any & all repairs MUST be pre-approved and heads re-certified. If any spec head is found to be modified, it must be REPLACED with a certified spec head. Any attempt to circumvent the intent or spirit of the spec head rule will result in loss of attendance points, confiscation of suspects parts and other significant penalties. The technical committee is resolute. The spirit and intent of the Spec Head rule will prevail. We reserve the right to exchange any Spec Head at any time. If heads are illegal, NO exchange will be made. - Maximum C.I. 315.9, no tolerance. Max Stroke 3.480+/-0.020 OR max. Bore 3.801 CANNOT MAX. BOTH (do the math).
- Flat top pistons with valve relief, cannot protrude from cylinder bore.
- Crank, cast iron or steel, minimum weight 48 lbs., 1% tolerance, and minimum main bearing diameter 2.450-.030.
- 5.7” steel rods, minimum rod journal diameter 2.100-.030.
- Damper or steel hub. Damper must be SFI approved. Stock location water pump.
- Flat tappet cam, stock diameter tappets (.842) NO roller, hydraulic, or mushroom or radius tappets.
- No hard face overlay cams. No device to vary cam timing while running. Stock firing order 18436572.
- Valve spring specs: Only straight wound springs with flat damper. Max. Dia. 1.265”, Min .dia 1.200” . Max Installed ht. 1.900”. ABSOLUTE MAX SPRING PRESSURE: @ seat 120 LBS>, @0.500 lift 355 LBS. Maximum wire diameter 0.195”, Minimum full number of coils 5.
- Wet sump, internal pump only. No crankcase vacuum systems.
- Roller rockers allowed. NO shaft systems. 3/8” stud mount rockers only.
- Absolute Maximum valve lift, measured at zero lash at valve retainer (.510” int.-.535” ext).
- No stud girdles, rev kits, or other valve train stabilizers.
- No repositioning or bushing of cam or lifter bores. Stock cam bore Dia. 1.869” + or – 0.002”.
- Valve sizes: Intake 1.94, Exhaust 1.600, Stem 11/32” , original length and weight, No altered or hollow stems.
- Ferrous (steel) Only: Valves, Retainers, Keepers, Push Rods, Springs, Tappets, Crank, Rods, Wrist Pins, Fasteners, Main Caps, Cam and Crank drives. NO TITANIUM, COMPOSITES, CERAMICS AND NOT COATINGS OF ANY TYPE in engine. Except Rod & Main Bearings.
- No camshaft gear of belt drives. Chain may be roller type. No device to vary cam timing.
- Ignition systems: Magnetos, electronic ignitions, or Kettering type. No crank triggers.
- Constant flow butterfly type fuel injection only.
ENGINE TECH PROCEDURES: All engines in the West Texas Sprint Car Series must be inspected and sealed prior to competing in any scheduled racing event. All engines must meet the required specs set forth by the West Texas Sprint Series engine rules. (See Engine rules and Race saver 305 spec. head rules, above) All engine inspections will be carried out by an RSCR Tech and one representative of the engine being inspected. This representative will be responsible for any rules violations/infractions from that point forward and will sign a statement of such at the end of the inspection process. The following criteria must be met when your engine is to be inspected. Failure to meet these requirements will result in your having your appointment delayed until all prep work is done. REINSPECTION due to rules infraction or prep criteria will result in a SECOND inspection fee. Inspection fee is $100.00 when performed in Lubbock or Midland. Areas outside of the general Lubbock or Midland area will be subject to additional time/mileage fees. - Engines must be assembled in short block form, i.e. crank, rods, pistons, Camshaft, timing cover, balancer and balancer bolt. NO oil pan or heads. Engine must be on a suitable engine stand that can rotate 360 degrees. If your engine has a drilled or knife edged crank, you may be required to remove crankshaft to weigh it, ADVISE TECH. INSPECTOR OF THIS WHEN SCHEDULING APPOINTMENT.
- Cylinder heads must be registered and certified by V.S.S (French Grimes). Heads must be totally assembled and ready to install during inspection process.
- Lifters, pushrods, rocker arms and all bolts should be clean and ready to install during the inspection procedure.
- Four (4) short head bolts and two timing cover bolts are required to have a 5/64 of min. .080 hole drilled throughout the center of the top of the bolt to accept the engine seals.
Upon the completion of the inspection process the engine will be assembled to a long block configuration and sealed using two adjacent head bolts on each side of the engine and two adjacent timing cover bolts. The engine inspections and sealing process are vital to the integrity of the West Texas Sprint Series and also provides a thorough and timely post race inspection at each and every race. ENGINE SEALS WILL NOT BE TAMPERED WITH OR REMOVED FOR ANY REASON without prior authorization by the RSCS tech. NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS. There will be a SEVERE FINE AND PENALTY for this Violation. Any AUTHORIZED removal of any seal for the purpose of making repairs will require a new engine inspection before any new seals are installed. Engine seals will be checked at each and every event. CARS WITH UNSEALED ENGINES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE…NO EXCEPTIONS. CAR RULES: - Frame and body must be sprint car appearing. Wheel base 80” minimum, 95” maximum.
- Steel rear bumpers & rub rails required, .095 max wall (can not contain ballast or lead).
- Spec. right rear tire: DT3 Hoosier. No tire softeners may be used. El Paso and Las Cruces spec tire, Goodyear right rear allowed for only those drivers. Tire number C325 Goodyear durometor 52 or more. LEFT REAR HOOSIER STAMPED MEDIUM COMPOUND ONLY - (YOU MAY SIPE AND GROOVE THE LEFT REAR ONLY)
- Bead lock required on right rear. No bleeders anywhere.
- Top wing specs.
a. Maximum 25 sq ft wing. b. Maximum width 61” c. Side boards 30” x 72” maximum. d. No device to move wing while racing. e. 16” numbers on both sides of wing. f. Sideboards must be 90 degrees to center foil. 6. Nose wing specs: a. Maximum size of 6sq.ft. Maximum width is 36 inches. b. Shall be fully sheathed in aluminum. NO vent holes. c. Maximum distance from foil front edge to front of front axle may not exceed 20”. d. Foil front edge must remain at least 1 inch behind the front edge of front bumper. e. Front wing must be one piece. No split of be-wings. f. Wings must be fabricated of metal alloys. Not fiberglass or carbon fiber except nose caps. g. Front wing must extend beyond outside of front tires. Front wing may not be cockpit or driver adjustable while car is stationary or in motion. h. No moving parts allowed on or in foil structure. i. Front side boards maximum 12 inches tall and 26 inches long, with no more than 1 inch overhang front of the foil front edge to the side board front edge. j. Side boards may have front, back, top and bottom turnouts of no more than ½ inch. 7. Brakes in working order on at least 3 wheels. 8. No open drive lines. Safety hoop or strap required. Center section must be centered in frame. 9. Fuel tank bladder required. No electric fuel pumps. 10. Methanol only. No top lube or additives allowed. 11. Safety equipment required. Approved 5 point harness, fire suit, gloves, shoes, arm restraints, and helmet. Head & neck restraints recommended. 12. No mirrors. 13. No cockpit adjustable weight jacks, shocks or wings. 14. Fire extinguishers recommended. Teams are encouraged to keep fire extinguishers at hand. 15. No radios, computer aids or data acquisition equipment may be used during any qualifying, heat race, trophy dash, main or any other WTSS racing event. 16. Mufflers mandatory when required by track. 17. No traction control devices of any type allowed. 18. Tech official decides legality of entry; penalties will be determined by WTSS racing event. MINIMUM WEIGHT: Car and driver 1575 lbs. after main event, zero tolerance. Top 3 cars in heat and top 5 in the main will go directly to the scales to be weighed. You will leave enough distance between the cars to allow a push vehicle to push the cars on the scale. At no time is anyone allowed within 10 feet of the car except designated officials. ( it is the driver’s responsibility to keep everyone away from their car.) The driver must remain in the ar until he has been weighed. If a car is found to be light, they will be allowed one re-weigh ( the car will be pushed to a staging area and remain there until an official directs him back on the scale). The cars will be directed from the scale to a tech area. - 60 points will be awarded to all drivers that fail to qualify for “A” or “B”
All races will run as WTSS officials feel its to the best interest of the race program. QUALIFING 1. Qualifying heat races will be held at all events. 2. The car count at the close of the drawing for qualifying heats will determine the number of heats to be run. As each number is drawn for a car, that number will be posted and this procedure will be repeated until a number has been drawn for each car that wishes to compete. The lowest number goes to the pole of the first heat race, the next lowest drawn number goes to the pole of the second heat, etc. Once the pole position in each heat is filled, the next lowest number goes to the outside front row of the first heat, etc. If there are an uneven number of cars to equally distribute between heats, the last cars will be places at the back of the lowest numbered heats. Any cars not represented at the drawing shall be placed at the rear of a heat race. Heat races will determine the starting position for the balance of races scheduled. 3. Time trials may be held at some shows, depending on car count. 4. A car and driver qualify as a team. Each driver can qualify only one car. No driver will be permitted to change cars after taking the green flag of his qualifying heat race. An exception to this rule will be in a two day race. 5. WTSS or their representative will advise drivers of the make-up of the number of heat races, main events, field maximum size and other pertinent information at the drivers meeting. 6. The lineup posted on the pit bulletin board when cars enter the racing surface for any race shall be final line-up. In the event a car drops out of the line-up for mechanical reasons, the balance of the field shall move straight forward. The exception being if2 cars drop out from same row, prior to green flag. 7. The start will be official only upon the starter signaling with the green flag. In the event a pace car is used, all cars shall take their proper position behind it. In the event a pace car is not used, the pole car will set the pace which shall be consistent with track conditions and as required to keep the field in formation. WTSS shall be empowered to disqualify or penalize any driver violating this rule. 8. A white line or Cone will be placed on the turn 4 area for all double file starts. All cars must remain in proper order until the lead car of cars reach this point. Flag man will be instructed not to throw the green flag until then. If an official’s judgment the front row car or cars are out of position a yellow will be displayed, after the green and a warning given to offender. Any further violation will result in the offender being placed a row back with car behind offender being brought to front row. Any other car not in proper position in officials judgment will be penalized a minimum of 2 positions plus one position for each position gained over one. This penalty will be imposed on the next yellow or red flag. If there is no flag after penalty then it will be enforced at end of race. 9. Any car requiring a second push on start or restart of race will be placed a rear. 10. On all single file starts after one lap the restarts will start at a Cone to be placed on the front straight-away. The leader must start race at or near the cone and all cars must go outside of cone in the proper aligned order. Leader must set a consistent pace. Any car going inside of cone, hitting cone or passing a car prior to going outside of cone will cause yellow and be placed on rear. IF no yellow appears you will be penalized (2) spots for each position passed at the finish. NO brake checking at the cone area. 11. Any car on or near the racing surface that delays the start of restart of any race shall be penalized one lap by Officials. A work area will be designated at drivers meeting. 12. Alternates will not be taken to fill any vacancies that occur. 13. Any car not running at a reasonable racing speed may be subject to disqualification for safety reasons. Flag Procedures Yellow Flag: All cars stopping on a yellow will be placed on the rear of Restarting line-up. An area will be designated (usually the pit area) for any work to be done during a yellow flag. Cars remaining on racing surface that are able to restart without service will be placed on the rear, in the order they were running prior to yellow flag. Any car that goes one or more laps down while in the work area or pit will be out for that event. Any driver who works on his car or permits any other person (other than a track official) to work on his car on the racing surface, during a yellow flag, shall be penalized one lap. If a car needs a second push off, after any cars have started, he will start at the rear of that race. Any car that is involved in two unassisted yellow flags will be disqualified for that event. There will be one attempt at a green-white-checkered flag, if another yellow flag appears then the race will be restarted with the green and white flags displayed at the same time. Red Flag: Cars that the red flag was thrown for and any other cars that change any tire will be placed at the rear of restarting line-p. All others will get the position they were running prior to flag, if ready to join restarting line-up when called provided they went to designated red flag work area. It shall be the decision of the flag man and WTSS as to what cars flags were displayed for, and their decision is final. All Restarting line-ups will be single file after one lap with any lapped cars being placed in line-up. Note: Any car changing any tire during red flag will placed at rear also. (Wheel spacers may be changed if monitored by track officials) Work is only done on open red flag. Ask pit steward if it is open or closed. A race is not considered complete until the checkered flag appears. If a yellow or red flag must be thrown after the checkered flag appears, the race is officially over and the payoff will be done in the same manner as yellow or red flag realignment. RACE PROCEDURES: WTSS officials will work with track officials to ensure a safe and fair race program. WTSS does not have its own race judges and scorers, therefore we will rely on the hosting track officials for on track scoring and judging. We will abide by track procedures concerning yellow flags, red flags, restarts, and any other calls made during the race. After the green flag, the race is controlled, scored and judged by the hosting racetrack. After the checkered flag, the race results will revert back to WTSS officials for legality of race cars only. DISQUALIFICATION PROCEDURES: 1. Black flag (main event) - Loss of points for the night. (This does not include being black flagged for equipment problems, i.e. flat tire, etc). 2. Technical infractions (engine or car rules)- Loss of points for the night, last place money goes into WTSS operating fund and driver must start their next race as if they had missed two consecutive races at that track ( see #8 above in Line UP). 3. Any driver intentionally circumventing the intent and spirit of the WTSS rules and committee. Driver will not be allowed to compete until fines and penalties are satisfied. 4. Any member of a team, who goes to another competitor’s pit, or race directors, or the track officials and engages in a verbal or physical confrontation, will cause that team member and/or driver to be subject to immediate suspension and/or fine. 5. Only DRIVERS will be allowed to enter a protest of any rule, line up placement, inspection decision, track decision, etc. DISCLAIMERS: The rules and/or policies set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These rules shall govern the condition of all events and by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have accepted and agreed to comply with these rules and policies. NO EXPRESSED OF IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FOR PUBLICATION OF, OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator or official. The race advisor shall be empowered to permit minor deviation from any of the specifications herein imposed and further restrictions that in his opinion do not alter minimum acceptable requirements. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATIONS OF SPECIFICATIONS. WTSS and/or its officials will not be held responsible for any actions taken by host racetracks or their safety crews. By participating in said race events, all participants acknowledge that the suitability of the r=track, race conditions, and safety considerations pertaining to their car and racing equipment is solely their responsibility.
